On Friday’s episode of HBO’s “Real Time,” comedian and political commentator Bill Maher criticized the Democratic Party for catering to its far-left wing, urging the party to cut ties with extreme elements within its ranks. Maher argued that the party’s current approach is failing to appeal to a broader audience, and that moderates now have the leverage to push back against radical influences.

Call for a Clean Break

Maher stated that the Democratic Party needs to take a firm stance and distance itself from the far-left faction, including the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). He emphasized that the party’s current platform is too aligned with extreme views, and that a clean break is necessary to preserve its appeal to a wider electorate.

“To me, one of the great results of this election was it gave moderates a big stick to beat them off with,” Maher said. “I think they’ve got to cut them loose completely. But I don’t know if they’re going to do that.”

Concerns Over Socialist Tendencies

Maher also expressed concerns about the influence of socialist ideologies within the party. While he supports many aspects of the current social welfare programs, he warned against the more radical elements that are pushing for a communist-style agenda. He pointed out that the rhetoric and policies of some far-left figures are aligned more with communist principles than socialist ones.

“If you look at what they say, I try to sell this all the time, I don’t think people know it, just read what they say. It is Communist,” Maher said. “I’m not down for that.”

Disapproval of Anti-Womens’ Sports Policies

Maher also criticized some of the policies and rhetoric from the far-left, including those that advocate for restrictions on women’s sports teams. He cited examples of ads that promoted exclusionary policies, suggesting that such views are not in line with the broader Democratic Party’s values.

“A couple of them ran ads that said, no guys on women’s sports teams. We need more of that, right?” he said, clearly disapproving of the stance.

Maher’s comments reflect a growing concern among some moderate Democrats and critics about the direction of the party, highlighting the need for a more inclusive and pragmatic approach to maintain its relevance and appeal in the evolving political landscape.
