Residents of a small New Jersey township are expressing outrage after learning that $26 million was stolen in a fraudulent wire transfer, concealed for weeks until after the election. The revelation has sparked widespread criticism and raised questions about the timing and transparency of the township’s response.

Cranbury Township Mayor Lisa Knierim announced the financial theft on November 6, three days after the midterm elections and over five weeks after the fraudulent transfer. The stolen funds were originally intended for purchasing property to meet the township’s affordable housing obligations, according to reports.

The township, with a population of just over 4,000, is located about 20 miles northeast of Trenton. Law enforcement agencies, including the township’s police department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, have formed a task force to recover the funds. So far, nearly $17.3 million in assets have been frozen, leaving approximately $8.7 million unaccounted for.

Residents expressed frustration on the township’s Facebook page, questioning why the crime was kept secret. One critic wrote, “Just another local example of one party rule and what it gets you,” while another asked, “If this occurred on September 28th why is it just now being shared?”

Democratic Control Preserved in Midterm Election

The midterm election saw Democrat Thomas Szczur Jr. secure a victory over Republican Carol Haring, preserving Democratic control of the township committee. The win solidified the Democrats’ hold on all five seats on the committee, which has shifted from a swing community to a reliably Democratic municipality.

The announcement of the fraud has raised concerns about transparency and accountability. Mayor Knierim emphasized the township’s commitment to transparency, stating, “We remain committed to providing accurate, timely information to the public while respecting the integrity of the ongoing investigation.”

The incident has drawn national attention, with the fraudulent timing of the revelation fueling speculation about potential political motives. As investigators continue their efforts to recover the stolen funds, the township faces the challenge of rebuilding trust with its residents.
