A gunman killed six people in the main square of Poland’s second-largest city Saturday, an attack the country’s defense minister called an “act of terror.”
Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz used that phrase for the Saturday afternoon assault, according to The Times of Israel. Main Square draws heavy visitor traffic in Krakow’s Old Town, the Associated Press (AP) reported. Poland belongs to NATO and the European Union, according to Al Jazeera.
The attacker steered a car onto the square and began shooting from the vehicle, killing four women and two men, Krakow police stated. The gunfire wounded 15 others, including two officers, Al Jazeera reported. (RELATED: Police, Judges And ‘Coup’ Allegations: Poland’s Government Erupts Into Chaos)
Poland’s National Prosecutor’s Office opened a case Sunday, according to Al Jazeera. The case covers six killings and the attempted murder of many others, police officers among them, with the act “constituting a terrorist offence.”

The suspect’s views are “very radical” and “ultranationalistic,” Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said at a news conference, the AP reported. “Everything indicates that he was fascinated by far-right ideologies,” Kierwiński said. The man remains in critical condition after multiple surgeries, according to The Times of Israel.
Połish media identified him as Michal O., a licensed gun owner with no criminal record, Al Jazeera reported. Investigators found seven firearms at the family home and four more on the suspect or in his car, 11 in all, matching permits he and his father held, office spokesman Daniel Prokopowicz said. Some 411,000 people hold gun permits in Poland, Global News reported.
Officers searching the man’s home in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, 93 miles northeast of Krakow, found three more bodies, the AP reported. A man of 53 and two women, 52 and 21, bore gunshot wounds, The Times of Israel stated. Police identified them as his parents and sister. One person highly likely carried out both attacks, with the inquiry still open, Prokopowicz said.
Senior Constables Jakub Kulik and Artur Morański stopped the gunman, one while wounded, according to The Times of Israel. Malopolska governor Krzysztof Jan Klęczar credited them with holding down the toll, saying “the number of victims could have been significantly higher,” Global News reported.
The shooting was a “savage and murderous attack that’s shattered the peace of Poland,” U.S. Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose said, according to Al Jazeera. President Donald Trump and America mourn the victims alongside Poland, Rose wrote on X, Polish outlet Polsat News reported.
