Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) has warned Stephen Miller, the new White House Chief of Staff, to ‘lawyer up,’ but he could not name a single crime that Miller might have committed. During an interview with CNN anchor Dana Bash, Garcia focused on Miller’s role in shaping controversial policies rather than specific legal violations.
Policy Criticisms Over Legal Concerns
Garcia, who is set to chair the House Oversight Committee when Democrats take control in January, discussed the midterm election results and future legislative plans. He mentioned that the Department of Justice had already threatened an investigation into Trump over past comments about bringing ‘weapons’ to the ‘fight for democracy.’ Garcia criticized the administration for having ‘thin skin,’ but he did not offer any concrete evidence of criminal behavior by Miller.
When asked if Miller had committed a crime, Garcia responded by listing policies he deemed unjust and unconstitutional. He highlighted Miller’s role in creating immigration policies that separate families and the detention process that benefits large companies. Garcia argued that these policies violate due process rights and called for an investigation into Miller’s actions.
Focus on Oversight, Not Criminal Charges
Garcia insisted that Miller’s influence on major policy decisions, including those related to Iran, warranted oversight and investigation. However, he was unable to point to any specific crime that would necessitate legal action against Miller. Garcia emphasized that the focus should be on the ‘unconstitutional, unjust, and possibly illegal’ actions attributed to Miller, rather than any concrete criminal charges.
Despite the lack of named crimes, Garcia maintained that the administration’s policies required scrutiny. His comments reflect a broader Democratic push for oversight in the wake of the midterm elections, where they gained control of the House. The emphasis on policy over criminal charges underscores the political nature of the criticisms against Miller and the administration.
