Schweizer: Trump Holds Upper Hand Over Xi in U.S.-China Talks

2 min read

During an appearance on Fox News Channel’s “The Ingraham Angle” on Friday, Peter Schweizer, president of the Government Accountability Institute, argued that President Donald Trump held the upper hand over Chinese President Xi Jinping following Trump’s recent visit to the United States. Schweizer aligned with host Laura Ingraham, asserting that Trump’s position in the bilateral relationship was stronger than commonly perceived.

Trump’s Strategic Position in U.S.-China Relations

“Trump is the one here with the upper hand,” Schweizer stated, citing the political and military shifts within China as key factors. Schweizer noted that during Xi’s visit to the U.S., he had already taken significant steps to purge members of the Central Military Commission, a powerful body in China. He emphasized that these purges, which targeted over six out of eight members, were driven by Xi’s determination to eliminate politically unreliable officials.

“There are 45 military generals in China that have been disappeared over the last couple of years because they’re not deemed to be politically reliable,” Schweizer explained. He added that China’s economic struggles, marked by less transparency in economic data, further weakened Xi’s position. In this context, Trump’s diplomatic approach was seen as a strategic move to maintain influence.

Communication and Ideological Messaging

Schweizer praised Trump’s handling of the summit, highlighting his emphasis on maintaining open communication and ideological clarity. He pointed to Trump’s decision to showcase the U.S. Constitution and the First and Second Amendments as a symbolic gesture, sending a strong message about the battle of ideas between the two nations.

“You want to be respectful. You want to communicate. You want to maintain lines of communication. You don’t want to give anything away,” Schweizer said, calling Trump’s approach a “master stroke.” This strategy, he argued, not only reinforced U.S. principles but also positioned Trump as a leader capable of navigating complex international dynamics with confidence.

Broader Implications for U.S.-China Relations

Schweizer’s remarks underscore the delicate balance of power in U.S.-China relations, where domestic political shifts within China can significantly impact the bilateral relationship. His analysis suggests that Trump’s ability to leverage these internal dynamics gives him a strategic advantage in shaping the direction of U.S.-China interactions.
