A maintenance worker opened fire at a senior center in Los Angeles, injuring three of his coworkers, with one in critical condition. The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. at the Progressive Home for the Elderly, which is affiliated with the Progressive Community Missionary Baptist Church.

Shooting Details and Response

LAPD Deputy Chief Marc Reina confirmed that officers arrived at the scene within two minutes. Due to the inability to locate the suspect immediately, the call was upgraded to a possible active shooter, prompting the facility to go on lockdown. Reina stated that the suspect, Darry Arnette Barnes, 60, was taken into custody without resistance, and the handgun used in the shooting was recovered.

Survivor Accounts and Surveillance Video

Caregiver Dorothy Mobley told KTLA that she recognized Barnes at the front desk and overheard him say, “I’m tired of this,” before pulling out a gun and starting to shoot. Surveillance footage, newly obtained and shared on social media, captures the chaotic moments as Barnes fired from a cart and then from the far side of a counter as someone dives over it.

None of the approximately 100 seniors residing in the building were injured in the incident. Barnes has been charged with three counts of attempted murder and is currently being held with a $1 million bail.

Context and Legal Action

The incident has raised questions about workplace safety and mental health in the caregiving and maintenance sectors. While no direct link to previous events has been established, the case highlights the need for ongoing support systems for individuals in high-stress environments. Barnes’ legal proceedings will continue as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
