Russia and Germany Hold First Diplomatic Talks Since Ukraine War

2 min read

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul for the first time since the start of the Ukraine War. The meeting, which lasted only 20 minutes, marked a rare diplomatic engagement between the two nations, which have had a long history of conflict, including three major wars.

Historical Tensions

Historically, Russia and Germany have clashed frequently, with their nations fighting no less than three major wars. In the Seven Years’ War, Russian armies occupied East Prussia and briefly entered Berlin. During World War I, Germany made marginal gains, but the conflict escalated into World War II, where the Eastern Front became the deadliest theater. The Red Army eventually took Berlin, leading to Germany’s division into two for decades.

Recent Diplomatic Engagement

The meeting between Lavrov and Wadephul was initiated by Germany and took place in New York. German diplomats requested no media access, banning audio recording and the publication of opening remarks. Wadephul emphasized that Germany does not accept incidents such as the drone attack in Leipzig, calling it an unacceptable escalation. He also warned Russia not to continue down this path, stating that Germany can defend itself and will do so.

Russian Response

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that the meeting was at Germany’s request. Lavrov, however, criticized the meeting, stating that Wadephul read from a note containing standard talking points that Germany has publicly declared for years. He claimed to have learned nothing new and accused Wadephul of acting arrogantly, stating that he had to lower himself to talk to Russia and now demanded concessions.

Implications

The brief and tense meeting highlights the deepening divide between Russia and Germany, with both sides expressing their positions without reaching a resolution. The encounter underscores the ongoing geopolitical tensions in Europe and the complex dynamics between the two nations amid the Ukraine War.
