President Donald Trump’s approval rating has hit a new low in a recent poll as the midterm elections approach, signaling a potential shift in Republican support. According to the latest Reuters/Ipsos survey, which surveyed 1,277 likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points, Trump’s overall approval rating stands at 32 percent. This marks the lowest approval rating since January, with even a significant drop among Republicans, who now approve of him at 73 percent, down from 82 percent the previous week and 86 percent in January.

Declining Support Amid Economic and Foreign Policy Concerns

The decline in approval ratings has been consistent since the Iran conflict began, with recent polling showing a drop in Republican support for Trump’s economic and cost-of-living policies. Since January, Republican support for his handling of the economy has dropped to 56 percent, while support for his management of the cost of living has fallen to 44 percent.

Political Analysts Sound Alarm Over Midterm Prospects

Political analysts have raised concerns about the potential impact of these declining approval ratings on the upcoming midterms. Alec Tyson, senior vice president and lead pollster at Ipsos Public Affairs, noted that the numbers represent a significant shift, stating, “Those are striking numbers. Numbers that we hadn’t seen until recent weeks here in our Ipsos polling.”

Republican strategist William F. B. O’Reilly warned that many Republicans could stay home in November, while Democrats turn out in droves. “The dissatisfaction with the Iran war strategy and rising gas prices are sapping enthusiasm on the right at the worst possible time,” O’Reilly added.

Democrats and Inflation: A Key Factor in the Midterms

Democrats have been vocal in criticizing Trump’s stance on inflation, particularly after the president argued that fuel costs were “a very inexpensive price to pay for what we’ve done.” Recent polls indicate that Democrats are seen as better equipped to handle inflation, with Fox News suggesting that Republican performance in the midterms will hinge on several factors, including inflation and base enthusiasm.

While the overall economy remains a contentious issue, recent national surveys show a tie between the GOP and Democrats on which party would better handle the economy. However, Trump’s approval rating remains high among self-described MAGA Republicans, with his allies focusing on highlighting leftward extremism, such as the rise of Democratic Socialists, to maintain base support.

Political analyst Ford O’Connell emphasized the need for Republicans to present a compelling case for retaining control of Congress. “Republicans have not made the case that when Trump came into office, the Biden economy was far worse than anyone imagined, and it was not going to be fixed overnight. That’s the problem, is they’re playing defense versus offense,” O’Connell said.
