In a harrowing incident in Minneapolis, Maria Grant narrowly escaped a violent home invasion after being brutally attacked by a man she knew. The attacker, wearing a wig, allegedly struck Grant repeatedly in the head with a hammer, causing severe injuries. Despite the trauma, Grant managed to keep the assailant from reaching the staircase where her young children were sleeping upstairs.
Brave Pit Bull Saves Family
As the attacker attempted to move toward the staircase, Grant’s 7-year-old pit bull, Athena, stepped in. The dog began biting the attacker’s legs, causing him to retreat. This gave Grant the crucial time she needed to escape with her children and call for emergency assistance. Grant required six staples in her head to treat her injuries.
Arrest and Release of Suspect
The suspect, later identified as Damonte Richardson, was taken to North Memorial Hospital with dog-bite wounds. However, local authorities released Richardson from hospital custody before formal charges were finalized, allowing him to walk free. An active warrant has since been issued for second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, but Richardson remains at large.
Community Safety Concerns
Grant expressed intense frustration over the system’s failure to detain the suspect, stating she fears for the community’s safety while he remains at large. Law enforcement is currently asking anyone with information regarding Richardson’s whereabouts to contact local authorities immediately.
