Major League Baseball is exploring hosting a game in a national park, sparking debate over its feasibility and impact.

Major League Baseball (MLB) is considering hosting a game in a national park, with Grand Teton in Wyoming emerging as a potential site, according to reports. The idea, reminiscent of the iconic Field of Dreams game, has sparked debate over its feasibility and impact on protected federal lands.
White House Clarifies No Direct Involvement
The White House has clarified that it is not directing the effort to host a game in a national park. In a statement, the administration emphasized that the idea is not being driven by the Department of Interior and is not a priority for the Trump administration. The White House also disputed claims that officials had scouted potential sites, stating that MLB’s visit to Grand Teton coincided with the presence of National Park Service Deputy Director Frank Lands.
MLB’s Interest in Specialty Games
An MLB official told the Washington Post that the league approached the Trump administration after the success of its other stand-alone events, such as the recurring Field of Dreams game. The league has previously staged specialty games at historic locations, including a Negro League ballpark in Alabama, a NASCAR racetrack in Tennessee, and the cornfield in Iowa from the movie “Field of Dreams.”
Controversy Over National Park Use
Grand Teton, one of the most-visited national parks in the U.S., is home to diverse wildlife and is among the nation’s most protected federal lands. The proposed game would involve constructing a sports facility in an area that has already been disturbed, according to sources. Environmental advocates have called the idea “ludicrous” and “ridiculous,” highlighting the irreplaceable value of the park’s natural resources.
Cost and Impact Concerns
Economist J.C. Bradbury estimated that the cost of building a baseball field in Grand Teton would exceed the $50 million spent expanding the Field of Dreams venue in Iowa. He also warned that the game could displace other tourists in a park where hotels are already full, raising concerns about the economic and environmental impact.
Public and Environmental Opposition
Local officials and environmental groups have expressed strong opposition to the plan. Teton County Commissioner Luther Propst called the idea a “radical departure from the tradition of national parks.” Betsy Buffington of the National Parks Conservation Association emphasized that the park’s unique ecosystem is irreplaceable and should not be compromised for commercial use.
