The Trump administration has begun mailing $500 refund checks to nearly 1 million Americans who were overcharged for ObamaCare insurance. Over 950,000 Americans across 30 states will receive the checks, which are accompanied by a signed letter from President Donald Trump.
Refunds Target Overcharged Health Insurance Users
According to the Treasury Department, the refund checks are part of an effort to return money to individuals who were overcharged for health insurance through the ObamaCare exchange. The letter accompanying the checks states, “For years, the Biden administration overcharged you to fund the operation of HealthCare.gov. That money belongs to hard-working Americans, not the Government, and now I’m returning it to you!”
These refunds are separate from the $5,000 checks Trump previously promised to every American adult if Republicans win the midterms. During a speech at the Republican midterm convention on Sept. 10, Trump announced the refund initiative, calling out the Biden administration for its role in the overcharging of health insurance users.
Trump Criticizes Biden Over Healthcare Costs
“Our administration has discovered that under sleepy Joe Biden, American households buying health insurance through the ObamaCare exchange, which is a disaster, and the HealthCare.gov were massively overcharged, to put it mildly,” Trump said. “They were forced to pay excessive fees totaling over 500 million dollars.”
Trump claimed the administration is doing the right thing by returning the money to those who were “wrongly ripped off.” He also endorsed the Republicans’ healthcare legislation, known as The Great Healthcare Plan, which he said will lower drug prices, reduce insurance premiums, and increase industry transparency.
Proposed Healthcare Reforms Aim to Boost Transparency
“We will stop all payments to big insurance and give the money directly to the people who will then be able to buy better healthcare at a much lower cost and keep the money, and keep the difference,” Trump said. “We’ll have maximum price transparency and require all prices to be posted in plain, beautiful, English.”
Trump also emphasized the need for insurance companies to disclose their profits and the number of claims they deny, so consumers can identify the “good ones from the bad.” He noted that the relief begins with refunding those who were overcharged, marking a significant step in his campaign to reform the healthcare system.
