President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that South Korea has committed $54 billion to the construction of the Alaska LNG pipeline, a project that Alaskans have long awaited. The announcement, made at the White House, marks a significant step forward for a project that has been under discussion for over half a century.

South Korea’s Financial Commitment

As part of a $350 billion investment pledge during trade talks with Washington, South Korea has allocated $200 billion for strategic investments, with $54 billion specifically earmarked for the Alaska LNG pipeline. The project, which involves an 807-mile pipeline from the North Slope to the southern coast of Alaska, is projected to transport 3.9 billion cubic feet of gas daily and produce up to 20 million metric tons of LNG annually.

Project Details and Development

The developer, Glenfarne, which owns 75% of the project alongside the state of Alaska, plans to build the pipeline in two stages. The first phase will involve a 739-mile line to supply Alaskans, with the export terminal to follow. Glenfarne aims to begin operations by 2029.

Challenges and Concerns

Despite the financial backing, the project faces challenges, including doubts about its cost-effectiveness and profitability. Glenfarne has not yet finalized an investment decision and is dependent on an overhaul of Alaska’s tax structure. South Korea has emphasized that any U.S. project it funds must be commercially viable, leading to criticism from some South Korean lawmakers.

International and Domestic Implications

The announcement comes just weeks before the November midterms, as Trump seeks to bolster his economic record. It also supports Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-AK), a longtime advocate for the pipeline, who is in a tight re-election race against Democrat Mary Peltola. The White House is framing the deal as a down payment on Trump’s promise to ‘unleash American energy.’
