Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has been tapped by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to co-lead a new Pentagon initiative focused on the future of warfare. The project, named Project Meridian, aims to identify the technological capabilities needed to achieve dominance on the next-generation battlefield.

Project Meridian and Its Goals

Announced on Wednesday, Project Meridian is a collaborative effort involving Musk, Anduril co-founder Palmer Luckey, and former Speaker Newt Gingrich. Hegseth emphasized that the project is not about developing new strategies or policies but rather about forecasting creative solutions for future conflicts. He highlighted the importance of engaging external innovators and technologists to avoid internal biases and ensure a broader perspective.

The initiative is set to be completed within 120 days, with its final report released to the public in an unclassified format. Musk, who has previously worked with the Pentagon on various projects, including a $200 million contract with xAI in 2025, is now entering an advisory role under the Trump administration for the first time since his departure from DOGE.

Musk’s Pentagon History

Musk’s collaboration with the U.S. military has been extensive. His rocket company, SpaceX, has received over $1.6 billion in orders from the U.S. Space Force for Falcon 9 launches through 2027. This new role marks a significant step in his ongoing involvement with defense technology and strategy.

Project Meridian reflects a growing trend of integrating private-sector innovation into national defense planning. As the U.S. continues to face evolving threats, the involvement of figures like Musk underscores the importance of leveraging cutting-edge technology to maintain strategic advantage.
