A Nigerian man, Adeniyi Adeyemi, is facing charges for running a fake government agency with over a million dollars in federal funding. The case has drawn significant attention due to the scale and sophistication of the fraud.

Creating a Fake Agency

Adeyemi, who operated the so-called Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), managed to secure office space within the Federal Secretariat office complex in Abuja. He also obtained a million dollars in funding from the Nigerian federal government, using presidential stationery to request cooperation from other agencies.

Prosecutors allege that Adeyemi forged a letter of appointment from President Bola Tinubu, purportedly signed by presidential chief of staff Femi Gbajabiamila. Gbajabiamila filed a petition to arrest Adeyemi, who faces eight counts of conspiracy, forgery, and impersonation alongside two accomplices.

Court Proceedings and Legal Defense

Adeyemi appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja after several failed attempts to bring him before the court. His lawyers claimed he skipped his July arraignment due to fears for his life and had written an open letter to President Tinubu for protection.

Despite his claims, Adeyemi was arrested within 12 hours of failing to appear for a July arraignment and was remanded to custody in the Kuje Correctional Center. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and has claimed his PFIPC was a legitimate agency aimed at bringing foreign investment into Nigeria.

Public Reaction and Allegations

The case has sparked widespread discussion among Nigerians, who have long criticized government corruption and inefficiency. Critics suggest Adeyemi may have paid officials to avoid oversight, with some alleging he paid Gbajabiamila 400 million naira for help forging his appointment document.

Adeyemi has requested Tinubu to establish an independent anti-corruption panel to investigate his case, highlighting the broader concerns about corruption within the Nigerian government.
