President Donald Trump took aim at Texas Democrat James Talarico during remarks at the Peterbilt Motors Company plant in Denton, Texas, on Thursday, mocking the former state representative for his controversial vegan campaign. Trump referred to Talarico as a ‘freako’ and joked that the candidate privately engages in self-induced vomiting after eating meat, despite publicly promoting a ‘non-meat campaign.’
Talarico’s Controversial Vegan Campaign
Talarico, who ran for the Texas State House in 2022, famously declared his campaign a ‘non-meat campaign,’ vowing to only purchase vegan products from local businesses. He framed his stance as a climate-conscious choice, stating that protesting meat consumption was ‘the right thing to do.’
However, Talarico has since distanced himself from his initial remarks, telling CBS in May that his campaign ‘basically runs on Texas barbecue.’ This shift has not stopped Trump from capitalizing on the controversy, using it as a comedic jab against the Democrat.
Trump’s Jokes and Political Strategy
During a speech at the plant, Trump described Talarico as a ‘freako’ and suggested that the candidate’s vegan lifestyle is ill-suited for Texas. ‘You know what a vegan is, vegans don’t do well in Texas,’ Trump remarked, adding that Talarico now eats meat but throws it up afterward.
Trump also referenced Talarico’s ‘beat meat’ campaign during the RNC midterm convention, claiming it was a ‘campaign to beat meat.’ He joked that the candidate’s shift to eating meat was a response to the negative publicity it generated.
The comments highlight Trump’s tendency to use humor and personal attacks as part of his political strategy, framing opponents’ unconventional stances as weaknesses. Talarico’s campaign, once seen as a bold environmental stance, has now become a target for political satire.
