As gas prices soar and the war in Iran continues, several GOP Senate candidates are shifting their stance, calling for an end to the conflict to ease the burden on American families. Battleground candidates in Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio have taken a rare break from President Donald Trump’s position, emphasizing the need to address high fuel costs.
Pressure Mounts on GOP Candidates
The shift began on Monday with Iowa Republican Senate candidate Ashley Hinson, followed by Michigan candidate Mike Rogers just hours later. By Tuesday, Ohio’s Jon Husted had also joined the call for an immediate end to the military conflict. With just 41 days left until the election, these candidates are facing bleak poll numbers and mounting public frustration over high gas prices.
Gas Prices and War Tied Together
Rogers highlighted the connection between the war and fuel prices in a grocery-store-themed campaign video, urging a temporary embargo on American diesel exports. “The war in Iran needs to end to bring costs down — but Michigan families can’t afford to wait,” he said. The national average for a gallon of regular gas has reached $4.47, with Michigan at $4.84, according to AAA.
Proposals for Relief
Hinson proposed several measures to relieve Iowans, including suspending the gas tax, pausing diesel exports, expanding E15 availability, reinstating the $1-per-gallon biodiesel tax credit, and creating a diesel relief program for farmers and truckers. “I am working every day to deliver bipartisan results for Iowans,” she said.
Political and Historical Context
Despite these calls for an end to the war, Hinson has a history of voting against resolutions to invoke the War Powers Resolution, including a September resolution that passed the House 220-204. Meanwhile, the conflict continues, with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian defending Tehran’s nuclear program and insisting on its right to peaceful nuclear technology.
Iranian Leadership Stands Firm
Pezeshkian’s address at the U.N. emphasized Iran’s commitment to its nuclear program, stating it is essential for healthcare, agriculture, industry, and energy. “We will not bow our head and give up the right that is inherently ours,” he added, stressing that Iran will not limit its peaceful nuclear technology.
