Retiring Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina is publishing private texts he exchanged with former President Donald Trump in his upcoming memoir, How to Lose Friends and Antagonize Presidents, set for release on October 6. The texts, which include profanity-laced messages, reveal a growing rift between Tillis and Trump, highlighting the senator’s frustration with the former president’s leadership style and policies.

Private Texts Expose Tensions

According to reports from ZeroHedge and Politico, Tillis shared screenshots of two texts he claims he sent to Trump earlier this year. In one message, dated May 22, Tillis wrote, “I still want to help but I don’t take this bull**** from anyone, including you Mr. President. Save that s*** for the cowards who don’t care if you fail. I care if you fail and right now we are failing.” This message was sent the same day Trump criticized Tillis on Truth Social as a “nitpicker” who was “always fighting against the Republican Party.”

On June 6, Tillis sent another text, in which he said, “If you had ever threatened me directly with a primary, I would have immediately told you to f*** yourself, and I would have announced my retirement immediately. Save those threats and head games for cowards and fools.” These texts, which Tillis is now publishing, suggest a deepening divide between the senator and the former president.

Public and Private Frustrations

Tillis has long expressed frustration with Trump and the MAGA wing of the Republican Party. A leaked email from Tillis to his Senate colleagues revealed his concerns about Trump’s push for the SAVE America Act and his criticism of Senator Tommy Tuberville for publicly attacking Republicans who opposed the legislation. Tillis argued that the act created political risks for vulnerable senators and criticized his own party for attacking colleagues who opposed the measure.

In July, Tillis used procedural tools on the Senate floor to slow down government business if a version of the SAVE America Act was advanced through reconciliation, arguing that the legislation could not be realistically implemented on the proposed accelerated timetable. In September, he publicly urged Trump to replace Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, accusing him of mismanaging military leadership.

Trump, in turn, has shown little restraint in his public criticism of Tillis. Following a dispute, Trump called Tillis a “loser” and said the North Carolina senator was angry because he would soon be leaving the Senate.

Public Reaction and Political Implications

As Tillis prepares to retire, his memoir provides a rare look into his private frustrations with Trump and the Republican Party. While Tillis frames his actions as courage, many voters in North Carolina are already aware of the broader context of his political battles. The release of these texts is likely to fuel further debate about the state of the GOP and the relationship between its members and the former president.
