Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) accused Democrats of blocking a bipartisan bill aimed at lowering electricity costs for American households, calling the move a political maneuver to maintain power. The legislation, known as the Ratepayer Protection Act, was led by Sen. Jon Husted (R-OH) and passed the House with overwhelming bipartisan support, 417-3. However, the Senate failed to bring the bill to a vote, with Democrats using a procedural vote to stall the process.

Democrats Blocked Bipartisan Bill

Moreno criticized Democrats for their obstruction, stating that the bill would have required data centers to pay for their own power, thus preventing electricity price hikes. He argued that the Senate’s procedural vote was an attempt to make Republicans look bad ahead of the midterm elections.

Moreno recalled the process of the bill’s passage, noting that Sen. Jon Husted had fought for the bill in the House and brought it to the Senate floor. He expressed frustration with the Democratic strategy, which involved objecting to fast-track procedures to prevent the bill from moving forward.

Media Coverage and Public Awareness

Moreno also criticized the media for not covering the issue fairly, claiming that left-wing outlets have been biased in their reporting and have focused on political attacks rather than the actual impact on consumers. He argued that the media’s reluctance to report on the bill’s potential benefits has left many Americans uninformed about the issue.

He emphasized that the bill was a common-sense measure that would have benefited the public, and that the Democrats’ opposition was driven by political motives rather than genuine concern for the economy. Moreno stated that if the public were better informed, Republicans would win a majority of the vote in the upcoming midterms.

Ratepayer Protection Act and Its Implications

The Ratepayer Protection Act, which Moreno described as codifying President Trump’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge, would have required data centers to produce their own power and not take advantage of local tax incentives. He argued that this would have prevented electricity prices from rising in the communities where these centers are located.

Moreno concluded that the Democrats’ actions were a clear indication of their priorities, stating that they are more interested in maintaining political power than in serving the public interest. He called the bill a ‘no-brainer’ and criticized the lack of support from Democrats, who only four members broke ranks to back the legislation.
