On Friday’s episode of HBO’s Real Time, host Bill Maher joined author Malcolm Gladwell to discuss the ongoing debate over gun violence in the United States. Maher emphasized that the current focus on so-called ‘assault weapons’ is misplaced, arguing that these firearms are not the primary cause of gun-related deaths.

Gun Violence and the Focus on ‘Assault Weapons’

Maher stated, ‘Whatever it is, we’re not going to get rid of guns in this country. We would have to confiscate them. And that’s just not going to happen.’ He likened the issue to a virus, noting that it’s already present and the challenge lies in managing it rather than eliminating it entirely.

‘One thing you get into, on the realistic tip, is that — and I’ve said the same thing for years — we concentrate on the wrong type of guns,’ Maher continued. ‘Assault weapons, yes, they’re sexier and they’re bigger and they look scarier, but that’s not really where the problem is.’ He argued that the public’s fascination with these weapons is more about perception than reality.

Gladwell Agrees: Handguns Are the Real Culprits

Malcolm Gladwell echoed Maher’s sentiments, stating that assault rifle bans are largely symbolic and focus on ‘cosmetic attachments.’ He pointed out that these regulations do little to address the actual causes of gun violence, which he and Maher both attributed to handguns.

‘It’s wrong to focus on gun categories,’ Gladwell said. ‘Handguns are responsible for most gun violence.’ Both hosts stressed the need for a more realistic and targeted approach to reducing gun-related deaths, rather than focusing on the aesthetics or symbolism of certain types of firearms.

As the conversation unfolded, it became clear that both Maher and Gladwell believe the solution to gun violence lies in addressing the root causes, rather than simply changing the types of weapons available. Their discussion highlights a growing consensus among critics that the real problem lies not in the guns themselves, but in the broader cultural and social factors that contribute to gun violence.
