Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has ordered a one-day military stand-down to help service members register to vote, request absentee ballots, and cast their votes ahead of the November midterm elections. The directive, announced on Friday, requires commanders across the Department of Defense to designate a mandatory day of pause for troops to focus on their civic duties.

According to Hegseth, voting for military personnel has been “time-consuming and complex,” as service members face unnecessary difficulties obtaining and returning absentee ballots while serving far from home. The stand-down, scheduled for October 15th, is intended to ensure that all troops, regardless of their location, have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.

In a video statement posted on X, Hegseth emphasized the importance of voting, stating, “We all agree that voting is important… So, how about we make sure those who serve our country have every single opportunity to vote?” He added that the initiative is part of a broader effort to increase voting participation among America’s men and women in uniform.

The order follows Hegseth’s prior efforts to encourage service members to register to vote, including a directive that urged troops to visit FVAP.gov for registration information. He stressed that the initiative does not involve telling troops which candidates to support, only that they should vote.

While the stand-down is a new directive, it draws on past examples, such as the 2021 training stand-down ordered by then-Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. Hegseth noted that the current order is part of a new and apolitical War Department focused on upholding the core values of the American way of life.

With the November 3 election just weeks away, the directive ensures troops stationed across the United States and around the world have dedicated time to navigate registration and absentee-ballot requirements before Election Day.
