A U.S. citizen has been sentenced to life in prison for killing four people, including a seven-year-old girl, during a high-speed chase in Texas in 2023. Rassian Nateray Comer, a smuggler from Louisiana, was involved in a deadly crash that claimed the lives of two of his passengers, a grandmother, and her granddaughter, who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
High-Speed Chase and Fatal Crash
The incident occurred on March 13, 2023, when Comer was fleeing Texas law enforcement. During the high-speed chase, he was live-streaming his escape, showing his speedometer reading over 100 miles per hour. The chase ended in Ozona when Comer ran a red light and struck a pickup truck driven by Maria Tambunga, who was with her 7-year-old granddaughter, Emilia Brooke Tambunga.
The crash resulted in the deaths of both Tambunga and her granddaughter, as well as two of the 11 illegal aliens in Comer’s vehicle. The other nine illegal aliens suffered serious injuries. Comer was arrested at the scene and admitted to his fourth smuggling trip and possession of a stolen handgun.
Legal Consequences and Sentencing
Comer was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including conspiracy to transport illegal aliens resulting in death and possession of a stolen firearm. U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould emphasized that the sentence sends a clear message that the government will respond with full force against criminals who endanger human lives.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin described the tragedy as ‘almost beyond words,’ stating that Comer’s actions endangered many lives for profit. The case was a result of a DHS investigation, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat human smuggling and the dangers it poses to both migrants and innocent bystanders.
