Federal immigration authorities arrested 25-year-old illegal alien Samuel Reveron Ascanio, also known as ‘mole man,’ after New York City officials released him following his arrest on a criminal trespassing charge. The incident highlights tensions between federal immigration enforcement and local sanctuary policies in New York City.

Illegal Alien Released by Judge Despite Criminal History

Reveron Ascanio, who entered the U.S. illegally in August 2022, was arrested on September 24 for criminal trespassing after being spotted emerging from a manhole near Park Avenue and East 61st Street. Despite having a federal arrest warrant for criminal mischief, he was released by Judge Sheridan Jack-Browne on a non-bail-eligible trespass charge.

ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations New York City Field Office Director Kenneth Genalo criticized the decision, stating that releasing the individual ‘needlessly returned an alleged public-safety threat to the streets.’ Genalo emphasized that ICE would continue enforcing federal immigration law regardless of local cooperation.

Sewer Scavenging and Public Safety Concerns

Authorities reported that Reveron and Kevin Rodriguez, a legal U.S. resident, were part of a ‘mole people’ pattern of scavengers searching for valuables in sewer systems. The group allegedly emerged from the sewers to look for gold, jewelry, and scrap, with Reveron bluntly admitting they were seeking ‘anything of value.’

The operation was linked to a broader pattern of individuals entering the sewer system to search for lost items. While the timing of the incident was alarming due to the presence of world leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, officials clarified that the activity was not targeted at any specific individual.

Sanctuary Rules and Legal Challenges

New York’s sanctuary rules played a significant role in the release, as the NYPD does not participate in civil immigration enforcement. This has led to ongoing challenges in balancing local policies with federal immigration law. The case also raises questions about the effectiveness of local judges in upholding federal immigration standards.

Reveron pleaded not guilty and was released the next day, with his lawyer dismissing the case as ‘petty.’ However, ICE has continued its efforts to remove ‘violent, dangerous offenders’ from communities, emphasizing the administration’s stance on criminal illegal aliens.
