President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) for blocking the Sunshine Protection Act, urging the Arkansas Republican to ‘take the win’ on the issue of permanent daylight saving time. In a post on Truth Social, Trump accused Cotton of letting his ‘ego’ stand in the way of a bipartisan victory that could benefit both the Senate and the Republican Party.

Trump argued that the House had already approved the bill by a broad bipartisan vote, and that the Senate’s delay was holding back a much-needed win for the GOP. ‘The House approved, long ago, “The Sunshine Protection Act,” by a very Bipartisan Vote, 308 to 117,’ Trump wrote. ‘It has been held up in the Senate, a place where things go to die, by Tom Cotton, for months!’

Cotton, however, has consistently opposed the legislation, citing concerns over the impact of year-round daylight saving time on Arkansans. ‘Arkansans don’t want their kids going to school in the pitch dark,’ Cotton wrote in a previous post. ‘I’ll always put Arkansas first.’

Trump also highlighted his own success in Arkansas, noting that he had carried the state by overwhelming margins in three presidential elections. ‘If Tom Cotton were putting Arkansas first, he would give them an extra hour of daylight,’ Trump wrote. ‘And, more importantly, they wouldn’t have to run all over their houses, farms, work places, and everywhere else, twice a year, having to change their clocks.’

The president also made a case for the benefits of permanent daylight saving time, citing its potential to reduce crime and improve safety. ‘Daylight Saving Time is 65-35 in the Polls but, why wouldn’t it be — Who wouldn’t want more “SUN” in the afternoon than in the morning?’ Trump wrote. ‘It’s even been proven to be better in stopping CRIME, something of which I have done an Historic job because, CRIMINALS DON’T LIKE WORKING IN THE LIGHT.’

Despite Trump’s push, the bill remains stalled in the Senate, where it has not advanced despite its bipartisan support in the House. Cotton’s opposition has been a major hurdle, with the senator arguing that the policy could have unintended consequences for families and communities.

The dispute highlights a broader tension between the executive and legislative branches, as well as the challenges of securing legislative victories in a divided Congress. Trump’s call for Cotton to ‘take the win’ reflects his frustration with the Senate’s inaction on a policy he believes has broad public support.
