The U.S. Department of Justice has subpoenaed the leadership PAC of Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) as part of a federal criminal investigation into the use of campaign funds for personal expenses. According to a copy of the subpoena obtained by POLITICO, the request was issued on August 21 and sought records related to activities on or about September 9, 2025. The subpoena also asked for statements Gallego provided to the Senate Ethics Committee during its own misuse-of-funds probe, which was dismissed in June.
Gallego’s PAC Complies with Subpoena
A spokesperson for Gallego confirmed that the PAC complied with the subpoena, stating that it turned over all requested information. The spokesperson, Jacques Petit, said the PAC had nothing to hide, but did not clarify whether Gallego himself or his staff had been subpoenaed. The subpoena, which relates to an ongoing criminal investigation, sets a deadline of September 4 for the submission of records, which will be handed to a grand jury.
Investigation into Campaign Spending
The probe stems from reports detailing how Gallego used campaign funds for personal and family expenses. POLITICO documented a series of family trips to destinations such as Disneyland, Disney World, Miami, and Chicago. Additionally, the report highlighted over $18,000 in childcare reimbursements since 2019, including $400 given to his mother-in-law. Sources described the account as his ‘personal slush fund.’
Swalwell Linked to PAC Misuse
The investigation also involves disgraced former Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), who co-founded the ‘Swallego Victory Fund’ with Gallego in 2022. The fund was used to purchase Super Bowl LVII tickets in Glendale, Arizona, and reportedly spent over $37,000 on tickets and meals before being terminated, with $7,600 going to each of their campaigns.
Subpoena Follows Earlier Reports
The subpoena builds on earlier reporting by Breitbart, which noted that federal prosecutors acted shortly after the Senate Ethics Committee concluded its inquiry. The senator’s office dismissed this as ‘politically motivated.’ Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) filed the complaint that initiated the Senate ethics inquiry.
