Hunter Biden is locked in a legal battle to keep a $1.7 million defamation judgment he won against Overstock.com founder Patrick Byrne, as former lawyers seek to claim the payout to settle outstanding fees. The dispute has escalated as Biden’s current attorney, Brian Sullivan, moves to strike a lien placed by the law firm Winston Taylor LLP, which previously represented Biden in the Byrne case, congressional investigations, and his felony cases.

Legal Battle Over Funds

Winston Taylor LLP filed a notice of lien against Biden, claiming that any payout from the defamation judgment should first go toward satisfying the firm’s unpaid fees. Sullivan, however, argues that the contract Biden signed did not adequately explain the consequences of a lien, especially since Biden, a lawyer himself, was aware of the risks.

Biden has consistently testified that he is “penniless” and has no assets, including a car or a phone. Despite the $1.7 million judgment, which he won in default when Byrne did not appear in court, Biden has not intended to pay the outstanding debts. Byrne is currently appealing the judgment but has posted a $2.1 million bond to ensure he will pay if he loses the appeal.

Lawyers’ Risk and Struggles

Sullivan explained that Winston Taylor LLP took on the case knowing that Biden might not be able to pay, and that the firm had hoped for a legal defense fund. However, the number of donors willing to support Biden has dwindled since his father, Joe Biden, left the Oval Office.

The law firm, which is now suing Biden for millions in fees, claims that Biden destroyed evidence and has been “evasive” in his responses. Sullivan emphasized that the lien is in his interest as well, as the entire judgment is likely to be consumed by the old lawyers’ fees, leaving Sullivan unpaid for his recent work.

Abbe Lowell, a former attorney for Biden at Winston Taylor LLP, has since left the firm, potentially giving Biden more freedom to avoid paying. Sullivan noted that the lien is not Lowell’s, and that the firm maintains a good relationship with him despite his departure.

Rebranding Amid Legal Challenges

Biden, who claims he has achieved years of sobriety, is currently on a media tour attempting to rebrand himself as a “new man.” However, materials on his infamous laptop revealed his past behavior of scheming to cut others out of money while spending lavishly on himself.
