Stanford University, known for its liberal leanings and prestigious reputation, is witnessing a notable Catholic revival, with a growing number of Gen Z students embracing the faith. According to a recent report, the university has seen a three-fold increase in Catholic converts, marking a significant shift in the campus culture.
Surge in Adult Baptisms
Fr. Bart Hutcherson, pastor of the Catholic Community at Stanford, told the California Post that 46 adults entered the church at Easter this year, up from 14 the previous year. This increase is described as an ‘astonishing turnaround’ given the university’s history of averaging just four adult baptisms annually for about three decades.
Traditional Worship Attracts Students
Hutcherson noted that the revival is fueled by a renewed interest in traditional forms of worship. Students are drawn to the historical elements of Catholic liturgy, including Latin prayers, pipe organ hymns, and the ornate Byzantine details of Stanford Memorial Church. This traditional approach is attracting a younger, intellectually curious audience.
Intellectual Appeal of Catholicism
Many students are first drawn to Catholicism on an intellectual level, exploring the church’s history and philosophical traditions. Obi Nnorom, a sixth-year PhD student in electrical engineering, cited the writings of church fathers, early martyrs, and philosophers like St. Thomas Aquinas as a major influence in his conversion. YouTube videos highlighting the early church’s saints and martyrs also played a role in his decision to convert.
Conservative Think Tank Amid Liberal Campus
Stanford is also home to the conservative Hoover Institution, founded by former President Herbert Hoover. Despite its liberal reputation, the university hosts a range of ideological perspectives, including the conservative think tank, which has produced notable figures like Milton Friedman and Condoleezza Rice.
National Trend in Catholic Conversion
The trend of increasing Catholic conversions is not limited to Stanford. According to data from the prayer app Hallow, participation in the Order of the Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) on college campuses has surged by 115% from the 2024-25 school year to 2025-26. This trend is observed across both red and blue states, including institutions like Kansas State University, Texas A&M, and Harvard.
