Newly released documents reveal that the FBI secretly monitored Susie Wiles’ phone during her role as head of Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign, tracking calls with at least 21 Trump lawyers, campaign staff, and five journalists. The surveillance, part of a probe codenamed Plasmic Echo, involved a pen register and trap-and-trace device that logged metadata, including call times and durations.
Pen Register Surveillance Details
The FBI’s surveillance spanned from February to May 2023, recording who called Wiles and whom she called back. Analysts noted interactions with prominent figures, including current FBI Director Kash Patel and Just the News founder John Solomon. Although the pen register did not capture the content of calls, it provided a detailed map of Wiles’ communications, which could be used to build a case against Trump.
On March 24, 2023, an FBI employee in the Washington Field Office noted that Lawyer 7 had called Wiles at 2:04pm for 41 seconds, with a previous call on March 21. Another entry from late February mentioned an ABC News reporter contacting Wiles at 8:48 AM for 2 minutes and 36 seconds. These logs suggest the FBI was meticulously tracking Wiles’ interactions, even when they appeared insignificant.
NEW: DECLASSIFIED FBI Probe “PLASMIC ECHO”
A March 10 FBI memo detailed three pages of Wiles’ phone contacts, and on April 7, agents interviewed her. Three days later, they resumed the pen register surveillance, indicating a continued interest in her communications. Investigative reporter Catherine Herridge described the tactic as a classic FBI “tickle the wire” move: contacting the target and then monitoring who she calls next.
The probe also included tracking calls with the First Lady and political advisers, with an administration official calling the tactics “intrusive.” Herridge noted that the surveillance laid the groundwork for the classified-documents case against Trump.
JOHN SOLOMON: We have obtained the pen register records showing the FBI sitting in on Susie Wiles’s phones as part of Jack Smith’s investigation, code named Plasmic Echo, the originator of the Mar-a-Lago raid.
This surveillance is part of a broader pattern of FBI and congressional actions, including the collection of private records from Patel and Wiles, and the review of text messages from 44 members of Congress. The ongoing investigations have led to multiple legal challenges, including a lawsuit against Jack Smith by Senator Marsha Blackburn.
