Steve Hilton is gaining ground in California’s governor’s race, according to an internal poll conducted after their first debate. The survey, commissioned by Hilton’s campaign, shows a narrowing lead for Democrat Xavier Becerra, who currently holds a 5.6 percentage point advantage over Hilton.
The poll, conducted by David Wolfson, revealed that Becerra has 45.7 percent support, while Hilton has 40.1 percent, with 14.1 percent of voters undecided. This undecided group is significant enough to potentially shift the race in either direction.
These results mark a notable shift from a previous poll released by Hilton’s campaign last month, which had shown Becerra with over 50 percent support. The latest poll indicates a 6.3 percent drop in Becerra’s favor and a 3.1 percent gain for Hilton.
When undecided voters are forced to choose, nearly three-quarters—72.5 percent—favor Becerra, while 27.5 percent choose Hilton. This suggests that Becerra remains the preferred candidate among most voters, even as the race tightens.
Hilton has continued to criticize Becerra’s policies, arguing that they have “destroyed the California Dream.” In contrast, Becerra has blamed President Donald Trump for the state’s affordability crisis, stating that Trump has made an already high cost of living even worse.
The debate between the two candidates turned heated over immigration policy, with Becerra accusing Hilton of favoring immigrants who look like him, referencing Hilton’s European background versus Becerra’s Mexican heritage. Hilton responded by highlighting his own immigrant background and accusing Becerra of offering “NOTHING” due to his “smug, arrogant” leadership style.
The current RealClearPolling average does not include the latest internal poll, with other recent polls still showing Becerra with a 21.8 percentage point lead. However, the shifting numbers indicate a more competitive race as the election approaches.
