The Department of Justice (DOJ) has charged 16 foreign nationals across the United States with election crimes, including illegal voting and fraudulent voter registration. The charges were announced on Monday and span multiple states, highlighting a growing concern over foreign interference in the U.S. electoral process.

Multiple States Involved

Federal prosecutors have charged over a dozen foreign nationals in Florida, Louisiana, Wisconsin, and Minnesota with election-related offenses. The accused individuals are alleged to have participated in the 2024 presidential election, with several charged for illegally casting ballots.

Individuals Charged

Among those charged are Andrea Catanese, a 60-year-old Italian national, Terrance Patrick Evans, a 37-year-old Bahamian national, Pedro Pablo Ruiz, a 68-year-old Cuban national, Zianya Yllaly Zamorano, a 34-year-old Mexican national, Dudley Francisco Zeledon, a 56-year-old Nicaraguan national, and Sara Luma, a 30-year-old North Macedonian national. These individuals are accused of illegally voting in the 2024 presidential election.

Minnesota Charges

In addition to the charges in other states, prosecutors have also charged 10 foreign nationals in Minnesota with crimes such as falsely claiming to be American citizens and illegally voting. These charges further illustrate the breadth of the DOJ’s investigation into foreign interference in U.S. elections.

Earlier Charges

Prosecutors noted that 10 foreign nationals were charged with similar crimes last month, including illegal voting in the 2024 presidential election, the 2022 midterm elections, and the 2022 primary elections. These offenses occurred in multiple states, including Florida, Kansas, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, Hawaii, and Utah.

The DOJ’s actions underscore the seriousness with which U.S. authorities are treating allegations of foreign interference in the electoral process. As the 2024 election approaches, these charges serve as a reminder of the potential consequences for individuals attempting to manipulate the democratic process.
