Asaf Rejuwan, an Israeli insurance agent who helped stop a terrorist co-pilot from crashing a Flydubai flight, described a surreal moment at a synagogue days after returning home. The experience, which left him shivering, came after he survived a terrifying ordeal on Flight FZ1073.
A Moment of Gratitude and Revelation
Rejuwan shared his experience in a Facebook post, noting that he was not particularly religious but felt compelled to visit a synagogue to give thanks for surviving the attack. He described how the Gomel blessing—a Jewish prayer of thanksgiving recited after surviving danger—became a profound moment of reflection.
At the synagogue, Rejuwan read a verse from Deuteronomy, specifically Deuteronomy 33:26, which reads: “There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides the heavens to help you, and in His majesty rides the skies.” He said the verse struck him deeply, leaving him and other worshippers in awe.
The Power of Collective Action
Rejuwan also reflected on the collaborative effort that saved the lives of everyone on board. He noted that multiple passengers played critical roles during the emergency, including stabilizing the aircraft, assisting the wounded captain, and subduing the attacker.
Others helped by sharing a mobile hotspot, communicating with Israeli security officials, tracking the aircraft’s location, reciting Psalms, and passing along earphones to bind the terrorist. Rejuwan expressed gratitude not only for his own survival but also for the bravery and composure of the other passengers, including his wife, parents, and children.
A Call for Reflection and Gratitude
Rejuwan, who usually does not write much online, felt a strong urge to share his story. He concluded his post with heartfelt thanks, acknowledging the miracle of survival and the opportunity to share his experience with others.
“Thank you. Thank you for life. Thank you for the miracle. And thank you for the opportunity to stand here and tell about it,” he wrote. “Am Yisrael Chai.”
