Secretary of State Marco Rubio has arrived in Iceland, marking the start of a four-day trip to visit three NATO member nations. The visit, which includes stops in Greece and Portugal, aims to deepen economic, security, and defense collaboration across the alliance.
Focus on Arctic Security and Bilateral Relations
Rubio met with Icelandic officials in Reykjavík to discuss shared priorities such as a secure Arctic region, enhanced commercial and energy ties, and closer defense cooperation. The trip comes after discussions with Icelandic leaders at the NATO Summit earlier this year.

Before departing for Iceland, Rubio addressed reporters at Joint Base Andrews, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong ties with NATO allies. “They’re a NATO member and have been a good friend of the United States, so it’s an opportunity to stop there and meet with them,” he said. “But it really is a result of a conversation I had with their leaders at the NATO Summit — with the leaders earlier this year and with their foreign minister, so I’m looking forward to it.”
Expanding NATO Partnerships Across Europe
Rubio’s itinerary includes stops in Athens, Greece, and Lisbon, Portugal, where he will focus on strengthening partnerships and cooperation in various sectors. The trip is part of a broader effort to bolster NATO’s collective security and economic resilience amid evolving global challenges.
As the United States continues to prioritize its alliances, Rubio’s visit underscores the importance of NATO in addressing shared threats and fostering cooperation in the Arctic, energy markets, and defense capabilities.
