Two illegal immigrants from the Dominican Republic are accused of stabbing an off-duty NYPD officer seven times during a brutal robbery in the Bronx. D’Angelo Caraballo, 25, and Sneider Mejia, 24, allegedly targeted Police Detective Jose Mercedes, 33, after he was seen retrieving items from his car around 1:45 p.m. on Friday. The suspects attempted to steal Mercedes’ gold chain, but the off-duty officer fought back and was stabbed multiple times before the suspects fled the scene.
Manhunt Continues for Suspects
Both suspects remain at large as authorities continue their search. Police identified the suspects on Tuesday, revealing that they had crossed the border illegally in 2023. Mejia, who had previously been arrested and faced a deportation order, was detained last year, though details of the case remain sealed. Caraballo, who had prior arrests for menacing and gun possession, was also linked to a recent incident where he allegedly threatened to stab a landlord in the Bronx.
Mercedes was hospitalized following the attack and was released on Monday. He was seen walking out of the hospital on his own, supported by a crowd of hundreds of NYPD officers. His uncle criticized the justice system, stating that criminals are often released too soon, returning to the streets. “We want a tough stance from the justice system,” Ricardo Mercedes said. “The police catch them, but then they’re let go — right back out on the street. That is what we want to change.”
This past Friday, NYPD Detective Jose Mercedes was stabbed multiple times during a robbery in the Bronx. Despite his serious injuries, Detective Mercedes chased after his attackers on foot.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch visited Mercedes in the hospital, expressing support for the officer. The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter immigration enforcement and harsher penalties for crimes committed by undocumented individuals. Authorities are currently working to locate both suspects, with ICE and local law enforcement collaborating on the investigation.
