Violent protests have erupted across France, with hundreds of thousands taking to the streets to demand improvements to the French educational system. The unrest, which began in Paris last month, has now spread nationwide, resulting in arson, severe injuries, and thousands of arrests.
Initially sparked by student protests over teacher shortages, long school days, and neglected school buildings, the movement has escalated into a regional crisis. French Education Minister Édouard Geffray reported that 190 students were injured during the protests, including a 15-year-old boy who reportedly ‘lost a hand’ during clashes with riot police in Lens. He also noted that 24 French schools have been ‘burned and ransacked’ since the demonstrations began in September. Of the 5,060 people arrested so far, 87 are minors.
Although the education minister initially stated that the movement was ‘legitimate at the outset,’ France’s Interior Ministry has now declared that the unrest ‘no longer has anything to do with the legitimate expression of high-school students’ demands.’
Early Tuesday, President Donald Trump wrote in a Truth Social post that the French riots are ‘nothing less than out of control mass migration.’ ‘What’s happening in France is nothing less than out of control mass migration,’ Trump wrote. ‘This isn’t about schools, this is about Islam wanting to take over a once great Country!’
The protests are rapidly becoming a central issue in the campaign to succeed President Emmanuel Macron next May. Far-left presidential hopeful Jean-Luc Mélenchon has condemned the government’s response as repressive. Meanwhile, critics accuse his party, La France Insoumise (LFI), of trying to capitalize on the unrest for political gain and inciting violence, according to Fox News.
Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally, has criticized the left’s response to the nationwide destruction. ‘This is no longer about high school student protests. It is about riots organized by professionals and overseen by deputies from La France Insoumise,’ she said, pushing for a new anti-rioting law to be passed.
