A Mexican cartel has allegedly threatened to kidnap federal agents at the Texas-Mexico border, according to an internal alert obtained by NewsNation. The report details a known alien smuggler planning to bring undocumented immigrants from Colombia and Venezuela to the U.S., with the intent to target border patrol officials in the El Paso region.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) responded by stating that it maintains proactive intelligence on all foreign actors that pose a threat to the homeland. The agency emphasized that all relevant information is thoroughly vetted with appropriate partners to determine its validity. CBP also noted that its tactics, procedures, and methods for mitigating these threats are robust, though they do not comment on the specifics to ensure continued safety.

In January 2025, the Trump Administration designated the cartels and other organizations as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO). Late last month, Trump’s State Department sanctioned Sinaloa Cartel leaders and other individuals tied to the cartel. The State Department highlighted that the action reflects a whole-of-government approach to combat transnational criminal organizations and the FTOs with which they intersect.
“Today’s designations highlight the corrosive reach of cartel influence into Mexican governance, particularly in Baja California, where associates of the governor’s ex-husband, a former Mexicali public security director, and other political operators allegedly accepted bribes to shield Sinaloa Cartel operations from law enforcement,” the State Department said.
While there is no official count, the Trump Administration’s border and financial crackdowns have cost the Mexican Cartels well over $1 billion in losses per year. These measures have significantly impacted the cartels’ operations and financial stability.
