DHS Secretary: Immigration Enforcement Stabilizes Housing Costs
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin claims ICE raids help stabilize rents and home prices across the U.S.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin has stated that enforcing immigration laws is helping stabilize rents and home prices for Americans. During an event in Washington, D.C., Mullin told Breitbart News that interior immigration enforcement is partly responsible for stabilizing the housing market nationwide, a stance the Trump administration has previously promoted ahead of the midterm elections.
Mullin explained that allowing a large influx of people into the U.S. puts significant pressure on housing prices. He noted that when immigration enforcement operations are conducted in certain areas, and then withdrawn, the average rent tends to drop by about six percent. He emphasized the need to balance national security with affordability.
Recent reports indicate that home prices are declining in several states, including Texas, Florida, Minnesota, Oregon, and Colorado. These trends are attributed to an increase in housing inventory and persistently high interest rates above seven percent. A report from the left-wing Brookings Institution acknowledged that former President Joe Biden’s policies allowing millions of migrants to enter the U.S. have caused rents to rise by 1.4 to 1.6 percent while also reducing average wages by up to 1.5 percent.
The Brookings Institution’s findings align with a series of research papers suggesting that Biden’s immigration policies have had a net negative impact on American workers, their earnings, and housing prices. In June, the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas reported that mass immigration led to a rise in housing prices from early 2021 to early 2024, with an increase in population driving up costs.
A Housing and Urban Development investigation from last year found that Biden’s immigration policies have driven up housing prices for low-income Americans who do not receive public assistance. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has also highlighted that mass immigration under Biden has pushed up rents, particularly for working Americans.
