The U.S. Department of Justice has launched what it calls the largest denaturalization effort in modern history, filing denaturalization actions against 40 individuals accused of serious crimes or acting as agents for foreign governments. The actions were filed in various U.S. district courts between August 21 and October 2, 2026.
Range of Crimes and Nationalities
The accused individuals, ranging in age from the mid-30s to the mid-70s, hail from countries including Mexico, Colombia, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, India, the Philippines, Sierra Leone, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Egypt, Nigeria, Cameroon, Nepal, Peru, Haiti, Ghana, China, and Cambodia. Their crimes varied from sexual abuse and manslaughter to espionage and fraud.
Legal Basis for Denaturalization
Under the Immigration and Nationality Act, a naturalized U.S. citizen’s citizenship may be revoked if the naturalization was obtained through concealment of a material fact or willful misrepresentation. Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized that these individuals lied their way into U.S. citizenship, and the Department of Justice will continue to use denaturalization to protect national security and the American public.
Context Within Trump’s Immigration Agenda
This operation aligns with President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration agenda, which has included deportations, visa reform, and the use of denaturalization as a deterrent against future criminal activity. The move also follows the Department of Homeland Security’s recent announcement of high-profile arrests involving murderers, child sexual predators, and other dangerous individuals.
Recent Legal Actions and Enforcement
The denaturalization move comes less than a week after the Justice Department indicted 10 foreign nationals accused of illegally voting in Minnesota elections. Attorney General Blanche reiterated that only American citizens may vote in American elections, emphasizing the importance of enforcing this law to uphold democracy.
