U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Rodney Scott stated that the Trump administration has gained unprecedented insight into what is crossing the U.S. borders, marking a significant shift from previous years. Speaking at a policy event in Washington, DC, Scott emphasized the stark contrast between the Trump administration’s border security approach and the Biden administration’s open-border policies.

Border Security Transformation

During the event, Scott highlighted the dramatic reduction in illegal border crossings, attributing the change to the Trump administration’s firm enforcement policies and increased funding. He said, ‘Due to the Trump administration’s — not just rhetoric — but actual actions, and then backing up the words, working with Congress and the Senate to get us additional funding, we literally took a border that was completely out of control during the Biden administration [and transformed it].’

Scott noted that the Biden administration had opened the border significantly, with some areas experiencing hundreds of miles of unmonitored border for weeks or months. He stated that illegal entries peaked at around 18,000 per day during the Biden administration, a number that has since dropped dramatically.

Impact on Cartels

Scott also discussed the impact of the Trump administration’s border security measures on Mexican cartels. He explained that the cartels rely on the chaos at the border to facilitate their operations, including the smuggling of narcotics and other high-threat commodities. With the new enforcement strategies, the cartels have lost the ability to overwhelm law enforcement, making their operations more difficult and less profitable.

Scott mentioned that the administration is preparing to report on a full year of no releases from the border, a development that sends a strong message to potential migrants. This policy has significantly reduced the number of illegal entries, with daily crossings now down to under 200 on some days.

Situational Awareness and Data

Scott emphasized that the administration now has a much better understanding of what is happening at the border, thanks to improved technology and enforcement. He stated, ‘Today, we know more about what’s crossing our borders than we’ve ever known in the history of the United States. That situational awareness validates those numbers, and we’re down into like double, low, low, low double-digits knowing the gotaways because we know what’s going on.’

Collaboration with DHS

The event also featured a discussion with DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, focusing on border security, public safety, and American sovereignty. The event was organized in partnership with CGCN and ALFA Institute, highlighting the collaborative efforts to strengthen national security.
