Eva Marie Saint, the iconic actress who won an Academy Award for her debut film On the Waterfront and starred in the Alfred Hitchcock thriller North by Northwest, has died at the age of 102. Saint passed away at her home in Los Angeles, as confirmed by her family representative, Jeff Sanderson.

A Career Marked by Independence and Star Power

Known for her striking presence and unique talent, Saint made an unforgettable debut in On the Waterfront, playing the love interest of Marlon Brando’s character. Her Oscar win at the 1954 Academy Awards was a defining moment, and she famously accepted the award while pregnant, quipping, “I think I may have the baby right here,” moments before giving birth to her son, Darrell.

Despite her early success, Saint maintained a strong sense of independence, declining studio contracts and major film roles in favor of personal time with her family. Her husband, TV and stage director Jeffrey Hayden, played a pivotal role in encouraging her to take on Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, where she played a seductive spy who eventually fell for Cary Grant’s character.

A Long and Diverse Career

Throughout her career, Saint appeared in a variety of films and television shows, including Exodus, Raintree County, and the sitcom Moonlighting. She also earned an Emmy for the 1990 miniseries People Like Us, and continued to act in films such as Because of Winn-Dixie and Superman Returns into the 21st century.

Her early career began in radio and television, where she gained recognition for her dramatic talent and striking looks. Saint credited her acting coach Lee Strasberg for helping her overcome shyness and develop her craft. She also had a deep connection to the Actors Studio, where she was mentored by Elia Kazan.

A Life of Resilience and Legacy

Saint was married to Jeffrey Hayden for 65 years, until his passing in 2016. Born on July 4, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey, she was initially destined to become a teacher but found her calling in acting after a chance role in a play at Bowling Green State University. Her career spanned decades, and she remained a beloved figure in Hollywood until her passing.
