A large, grotesque statue of former U.S. President Donald Trump has been installed at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, as a political statement. The eight-foot gilded statue, titled ‘The Orange Plague,’ was created by Danish artist Jens Galschiot and unveiled at a major thoroughfare near the Parliament’s offices. The statue depicts Trump as a naked figure holding a golf club and the scales of justice while riding on the shoulders of another male.

Political Statement and Artist’s Message

Galschiot, a known critic of Trump, described the statue as a representation of the former president’s impact on global politics. He stated, ‘Trump represents one of the greatest threats to the rules-based world order, democratic values and our common effort to solving the climate crisis.’ The statue, which is a temporary installation, was placed on Tuesday and will be removed on Thursday. Visitors are being given small replicas of the work as souvenirs.

Reactions from MEPs

While some lawmakers have praised the artwork as a bold political statement, others have criticized it as disrespectful. Eco-socialist Member of the European Parliament Per Clausen said Trump should ‘take the caricature on the chin’ and be ‘thin skinned’ if he didn’t like it. Right-wing populist Barbara Bonte MEP of the Flemish nationalist Vlaams Belang called the display ‘a disgrace,’ stating, ‘The people who lecture the world on dignity can’t even manage basic respect for the president of a friendly nation.’

Previous Display at Munich Security Conference

The statue was previously displayed at the Munich Security Conference earlier this year, but it was in bronze at that time and had not yet received its gold leaf gilding. The current installation in Strasbourg is the first time the statue has been displayed in a European Parliament setting.
