A federal judge in Texas has sentenced a sheriff’s deputy from Webb County to 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman during a traffic stop. The deputy, Ignacio Rodriguez IV, was found guilty of depriving a citizen of her legal rights and pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal with federal prosecutors, who agreed to dismiss additional charges.
Details of the Assault
The incident occurred on September 1, 2024, when Rodriguez pulled over a vehicle that was moving on the wrong side of the road. During the stop, he spoke with two women who admitted to having been drinking and returning home after a pool party. Rodriguez allegedly told one of the women that she needed to convince him to let them go or he would take them to jail.
The woman repeatedly told the deputy she was in a relationship and not interested in men. Rodriguez then turned off his bodycam, took the woman to his patrol car, and intimidated her verbally while gesturing to his handgun on his belt. Once inside the car, Rodriguez unzipped his pants, pulled out his penis, and forced the woman to perform oral sex on him in a rough manner that caused her to vomit.
Investigation and Confirmation
After the incident, the victim’s family contacted local police and took her to a hospital for a post-sexual assault evaluation, which confirmed her claims. Law enforcement also found video recordings from the area that corroborated the victim’s account. The evidence led to Rodriguez’s arrest and subsequent sentencing by U.S. District Judge Marina Marmolejo in the Southern District of Texas.
The case highlights the serious consequences of abuse of power and the importance of accountability in law enforcement. It also underscores the need for thorough investigations and the protection of victims’ rights in such incidents.
