The University of Arizona has suspended all Greek life activities following a surge in misconduct reports, including allegations of assault, hazing, and drug and alcohol violations, according to a university official. The suspension comes after persistent issues despite previous warnings from university leadership.
Dean of Students Issues Suspension
Just seven weeks into the fall semester, Dean of Students Chrissy Lieberman sent a letter to the university’s fraternities and sororities, informing them that all 21 Interfraternity Council chapters have been placed on ‘interim activities suspension.’ The decision followed a rise in misconduct reports, which the dean’s office claims have reached its ‘capacity’ for investigation.
Lieberman noted that the number of cases under investigation and the severity of the concerns are ‘egregious.’ The alleged behaviors range from physical assault and drug use to hazing and creating unsafe environments for students. Some cases are also under criminal investigation.
Restrictions and Next Steps
The suspension reportedly prohibits fraternities from hosting, attending, participating in, or sponsoring any organizational activities. This restriction remains in place until fraternity advisers meet with Lieberman during one of three scheduled sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday, and October 12th.
Lieberman emphasized the need for the Greek community to ‘step up and set an example for good,’ urging difficult conversations within the community to address the ongoing issues.
National Scrutiny on Fraternities
The suspension comes amid heightened national scrutiny on fraternities, following an alleged gang rape at Cornell University involving seven Chi Phi fraternity brothers in 2024. New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued an executive order appointing New York Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor in the case.
These events highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Greek organizations across the country, as universities and authorities seek to address misconduct and ensure the safety of students.
