Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) urged the Republican Party on Wednesday to move away from President Donald Trump’s populist approach and refocus on its traditional conservative principles during an interview on CNN’s “The Arena.” Tillis emphasized that the party should distance itself from Trump’s style of leadership, which he described as a misfit for the party’s values.

Rejecting Trump’s Populist Approach

Tillis stated that the GOP should “go back” to its conservative core, rejecting the populist policies that have defined much of Trump’s tenure. He criticized the current direction of the party, saying it has strayed from its foundational principles. “I believe in conservatism now,” Tillis said. “I don’t believe in a Republican Party that thinks equity stakes in corporations are okay, or that tariffs are acceptable regardless of trade balances.”

Calling Out Trump’s Influence

Tillis also took issue with Trump’s influence on the party, suggesting that some Republicans are attempting to mimic his style without fully understanding its implications. He likened the effort to “putting on a Spiderman costume without having been bitten by a radioactive spider,” calling it a “bad look.” He reiterated that while he supported many of Trump’s actions for the party, the current trajectory is unsustainable.

Reversing the Party’s Drift

In response to a question about whether the GOP has been permanently changed by Trump, Tillis argued that electoral losses could serve as a wake-up call for Republicans to return to their roots. “In a populist age, it’s difficult, but I think there’s nothing like a loss in the election for people to go back,” he said.

Reaffirming Conservative Values

Tillis expressed concern over the party’s current stance on issues such as foreign policy, particularly regarding Russia and Ukraine. He stated that the GOP should not be seen as endorsing Putin or any potential “win-win” scenarios with Russia, which he views as inconsistent with conservative principles. “That’s not a conservative Republican Party,” he said.

Political Realignment Needed

Tillis’ remarks highlight a growing divide within the GOP between those who support a return to traditional conservatism and those who continue to embrace Trump’s populist strategies. His call for a realignment signals a potential shift in the party’s direction, though it remains to be seen whether such a move will gain widespread support among Republican leaders and voters.
