The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued a dire warning about a ‘life-threatening storm surge’ as Hurricane Isaias approaches the U.S. Gulf Coast. The storm, currently a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds between 74-95 mph, could intensify to a Category 3, with winds reaching 111-129 mph. Fox Weather reported that Isaias rapidly intensified from a tropical storm into a Category 1 hurricane, with winds increasing by 40 mph in just 6 hours between Wednesday afternoon and late Wednesday night.
Storm Surge and Evacuation Advisories
The NHC’s 10 a.m. ET advisory warned that a life-threatening storm surge is expected from the mouth of the Mississippi River to Suwanee, Florida. Residents in the affected areas are urged to follow local officials’ guidance and evacuate immediately if instructed to do so. The advisory also highlighted the risk of ‘damaging hurricane-force winds’ over parts of the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama, and southern Mississippi, where hurricane warnings are in effect.
These areas may experience ‘long-duration power outages,’ and damaging wind gusts are possible over much of central and northern Alabama and portions of western and northern Georgia, especially in higher terrain. Additional Tropical Storm and High Wind Watches and Warnings are expected for these regions later today. Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, avoid driving high-profile vehicles, and prepare for power outages.
Flash Flooding and Government Warnings
The NHC also warned of possible flash flooding across the southeastern U.S., especially in southern Alabama and the western Florida Panhandle. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) issued a warning ahead of the storm’s expected Friday landfall, stating that even if the storm makes landfall west of the panhandle, the eastern, most dangerous side will impact NW Florida. He urged residents in these communities to execute their hurricane plans.
Florida Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) echoed the warnings, emphasizing the need for Floridians in the Panhandle to prepare for the storm. He noted that the federal government is committed to supporting Florida’s preparation, response, and recovery efforts.
