Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) voiced uncertainty on Thursday about whether Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) will seat newly elected Democratic members following the midterm elections. During an appearance on MS NOW’s “State of Play,” Khanna said he is “not fully confident” that Johnson will follow through with seating the Democrats who win in November.
Khanna’s Confidence in Democratic Wins
Khanna expressed confidence that Democrats will win both the House and the Senate, stating that it is an “open secret” that he is considering a presidential bid. He highlighted the wealth in his district, noting that he has access to $25 trillion, one-third of the nation’s wealth, but emphasized that this wealth is not benefiting the people in his hometown of Pennsylvania.
Khanna called for a new economic vision, including higher taxes on billionaires, Medicare for all, free child care, and the establishment of an industrial development bank. He described this as the “largest economic vision we’ve seen in the generations.”
Concerns Over Johnson’s Actions
Host Peter Alexander asked Khanna if he was confident that Johnson would seat the newly elected members. Khanna responded by warning that if Democrats only secure a few seats, Johnson and his allies could engage in “shenanigans” to block their agenda. He stressed the importance of winning a significant number of seats, such as 20 or 25, to make it harder for Republicans to interfere with Democratic priorities.
Khanna also referenced past actions by Johnson, such as preventing Rep. Adelita Grijalva from being seated to block a vote on the Epstein case. He noted that this one vote had a significant impact, suggesting that Johnson might take similar steps if Democrats win a narrow majority.
Broader Implications for Midterm Elections
The conversation highlights the tension between the two parties ahead of the midterm elections. Khanna’s comments reflect growing concerns about the potential for legislative gridlock if Democrats win a narrow majority. His focus on economic reform and the need for a new vision underscores the broader political and policy debates shaping the upcoming elections.
