The U.S. Department of Justice is preparing to seek a federal criminal indictment against Cassidy Hutchinson, the so-called ‘star witness’ in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack investigation, for allegedly lying to Congress. According to PunchBowl News, the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division has presented evidence to a federal grand jury and plans to present additional testimony and witnesses later this month.
Testimony Contradicted by Internal Accounts
Cassidy Hutchinson testified in June 2022 that former President Donald Trump had attempted to seize control of his presidential limo during his speech at the Ellipse on January 6. She claimed that Trump, after being informed he was being driven back to the West Wing, became angry and shouted, “I’m the f*cking president! Take me up to the Capitol now!” According to Hutchinson, Trump reached for the steering wheel, and Secret Service Agent Bobby Engel intervened by grabbing his arm.
However, the House Oversight Subcommittee, led by Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), later found that unreleased testimony from four White House employees contradicted Hutchinson’s account. The subcommittee stated that Hutchinson’s claims were fabricated, calling for her to be held accountable in court. Further reports indicated that Liz Cheney had coached Hutchinson before her testimony, raising additional concerns about the integrity of the process.

DOJ Investigates Alleged Perjury
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon is leading the DOJ’s investigation into Hutchinson’s testimony. The Civil Rights Division has not yet subpoenaed her to appear before the grand jury, but the DOJ is seeking a criminal indictment for lying to Congress. The case highlights the ongoing scrutiny of testimony given during the January 6 investigation and the potential legal consequences for those who provide false information.
The Gateway Pundit compiled a list of nine confirmed lies from Hutchinson’s testimony, which were later debunked. This case underscores the importance of transparency and accuracy in congressional testimony, particularly in high-profile investigations involving former government officials.
