Bloomington, MN Police Chief Booker Hodges has sparked controversy by stating that the focus on labeling gang issues as racist is ‘ridiculous’ compared to addressing the actual problem. During a recent broadcast of FOX 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul’s “FOX 9 All Day,” Hodges emphasized that Somali American gangs are currently a significant concern in the city.
Addressing Gang Activity in the Community
Hodges said, ‘We’re dealing with Somali American gangs right now.’ He went on to assert that while gang activity has historically involved various communities, including Hmong American and African American groups, the vast majority of Somali Americans are law-abiding citizens working hard to build their lives in the United States.
‘The vast majority of Somalis, just like the rest of us — Somali Americans, go to work every single day, busting their butt, trying to make a living,’ Hodges said. He emphasized that community engagement and understanding are crucial to addressing these issues, stating, ‘When you are really involved in the community like I am, you see these people working, busting their butt to make their American Dream.’
Rejecting Racist Labels
Chief Hodges also rejected the notion that the current gang issue is racially motivated, calling it ‘ridiculous’ to label such problems as racist. ‘To say it’s racist, it’s like, no, we’re not — I’m not going to go down that road,’ he said. He argued that identifying the problem is essential to solving it, adding, ‘If you don’t identify a problem, there’s no way you’re going to fix it.’
Hodges concluded by warning against generalizing individuals based on the actions of a few, stating, ‘We shouldn’t be pegging people and dumping them into groups based on a few people.’
Community and Law Enforcement Perspective
The comments have sparked debate, with some supporting Hodges’ emphasis on addressing real issues rather than focusing on racial labels, while others argue that systemic racism must be acknowledged and addressed. As law enforcement continues to navigate complex social dynamics, the balance between community engagement and public safety remains a critical challenge.
