President Donald Trump hosted a Columbus Day celebration at the White House on Friday, commemorating Italian explorer Christopher Columbus. The event, held ahead of the national holiday, featured a performance by Presidential tenor Christopher Macchio, who sang the National Anthem and later performed ‘Ave Maria’ and ‘Nessun dorma’ at the president’s request.
A White House statement emphasized the importance of Columbus’s legacy, stating, ‘Today, we reaffirm that Christopher Columbus is a legend whose vision, fortitude, and perseverance unleashed a dynamic of history that led to the creation of the greatest, freest, and most just Nation in history.’ The statement also warned against ‘radical extremists’ attempting to erase Columbus’s legacy.

Trump claimed his reverence for Columbus is a key reason for his support among Italian-American voters. He highlighted his efforts to ‘resurrect’ the historical figure during a time when public opinion of him declined, with many opting to celebrate ‘Indigenous Peoples’ Day’ instead of Columbus Day.
‘Earlier this year, I was proud to install a statue of Christopher Columbus on the White House grounds — an exact replica of the statue that stood for more than three decades in Baltimore, Maryland, from its dedication by President Ronald Reagan in October 1984 until rioters tore it down and threw it into Baltimore Harbor on July 4, 2020,’ the president said. ‘Now placed at the White House, this magnificent monument stands as a testament to the resilient legacy of one of history’s greatest heroes.’
The new statue, now located on the north side of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building adjacent to the White House, is 13 feet tall, weighs one ton, and was created using fragments of the original marble statue from Baltimore. Trump noted the renewed respect for Columbus during his second term, contrasting it with the distaste for him during the administration of former President Joe Biden.
. @POTUS : "American Patriots have always revered and respected this great Italian explorer… Yet, as you know, the Radical Left communists hate Columbus and they want to abolish Columbus Day." https://t.co/A4JURRgZC5 pic.twitter.com/Dl0SBCN7d4
‘These are different days, now,’ Trump said. ‘We protect Lincoln, we protect Washington, we protect Thomas Jefferson.’
