New York Democratic Attorney General Letitia James and her Republican challenger Saritha Komatireddy showcased starkly different priorities during a recent debate, with James citing a book on January 6 and Trump, while Komatireddy listed a children’s book for her 2-year-old.
James mentioned reading Unthinkable by Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), a memoir detailing the January 6 riot and Trump’s second impeachment. In contrast, Komatireddy shared that her favorite book to read to her 2-year-old was the Spanish version of Little Blue Truck, titled El Camioncito Azul.
As a mother of four young kids, the most recent book I read was Little Blue Truck or as our version is called El Camioncito Azul! https://t.co/ko8SUxd0ci
Komatireddy’s response, shared on social media, garnered over 140,000 views. Her campaign has focused on issues like lowering crime, combating fraud, and addressing homelessness. During the debate hosted by Spectrum News, Komatireddy accused James of being a “political hack” who used her office for personal gain.
“New Yorkers, you do not have an attorney general right now,” Komatireddy said. “For the last eight years, you’ve had a political hack sitting in the chair using our taxpayer money for her political purposes.”
James, a long-time critic of Trump since his 2016 election, has pursued legal actions against his administration and business dealings. Komatireddy also criticized the decline in Medicaid fraud convictions, noting that numbers dropped from 97 in 2018 to just 19 in 2024.
Conservative commentators praised Komatireddy’s debate performance, with former Michigan congressman Peter Meijer calling her “impressive” and highlighting her strong campaign ads. Republican political consultant Ryan James Girdusky called her “phenomenal,” saying he was “just finding out who she is.”
New York hasn’t had a Republican attorney general in nearly 30 years. The most competitive race in recent memory was in 2022, when James won re-election by over nine percentage points.
