An Avianca spokesperson told Fox News that the flight was diverted to Miami due to intense turbulence. “Flight AV042, operating from Medellín (MDE) to New York (JFK), encountered unexpected turbulence during its journey,” the airline representative said. “As a precaution and in accordance with the airline’s safety protocols, the flight was diverted to Miami International Airport (MIA), where the aircraft landed safely,” the spokesperson added.
The spokesperson noted that “three cabin crew members and six passengers were affected by the turbulence,” though only eight required medical attention. The airline has made arrangements for the remaining passengers to continue their journey to New York, with a subsequent flight departing at 8:15 am.

Miami-Dade Rescue confirmed that one of the injured passengers was taken to a trauma center. A female passenger who witnessed the incident at the airport described the scene as “not normal,” noting that more than five or six ambulances were on the tarmac, with several lights on as if waiting for something.
The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed it will investigate the incident. The turbulence, which occurred about 2 ½ hours into the flight, caused the plane to drop significantly, raising questions about the safety of the journey. The airline and authorities are working to ensure that all passengers receive the necessary support and assistance during this process.
