A Peruvian politician named Hitler Mussolini Simeón Flores has won the mayoral election in Queropalca, a small district in the Huánuco region. With 229 votes, Simeón secured a majority on the center-left Ahora Nación (Now Nation) party ticket, finishing with 34.5% of the 663 valid votes cast. His nearest competitor, Gaspar Benilde Osorio Zambrano of Popular Renewal Peru, received 204 votes, leaving Simeón ahead by 25 votes.

A Name That Evokes History

Simeón’s name has sparked international attention due to its resemblance to Adolf Hitler, the leader of Nazi Germany, and Benito Mussolini, Italy’s fascist dictator. His name has become a point of discussion, especially as he is not the first Peruvian with a similar name to win public office.

A Pattern of Historical Coincidence

Hitler Guesclin Alba Sánchez, another Peruvian with a similar name, served as mayor of Yúngar from 2011 to 2014 and won another term in 2018. His campaign drew international attention, particularly after a neighboring resident tried to block him from the ballot. Alba embraced the name, calling himself ‘the good Hitler,’ and explained that his father had not understood the historical association when naming him.

Global Phenomenon

The trend of people named Hitler winning office is not limited to Peru. In Namibia, Adolf Hitler Uunona won a local election for the fifth time in 2025. Uunona, who removed ‘Hitler’ from his identity card, stated that the name was normal to him as a child and had nothing to do with Nazism.

Names in Peru

According to civil-registry figures reported by La República, at least 3,943 Peruvians were named Hitler in 2023. This highlights the prevalence of the name in Peru, despite its historical associations.
